Installation - Datça Summer Workshop

2 to 14th September 2025

Hızırşah, Datça, Tûrkiye

Datça Summer Workshop 2025 is a two-week design build study that took place in Istanbul Bilgi University Campus and Datça’s Hızırşah Village in southwest Türkiye.

Planned as part of a summer school/workshop series that has been going on since 2019, DSW 2025 was shaped around the idea of designing and constructing a wooden structure in a rural setting, informed by the previous year’s study on traditional precedents called “çardak” in Datça.

Istanbul Bilgi University faculty from the department of architecture Burcu Kütükçüoğlu and Elif Kendir Beraha collaborated with Stephano Pugliese and Sebastian Erazo from Erazo_Pugliese and Kerem Erginoğlu from Erginoğlu Çalışlar Architects in this workshop and invited 12 students/recent graduates of architecture and interior design from three different universities in Türkiye, as participants.

The wooden structure was built in a park next to the schoolyard of Hızırşah Village with the generous support of Datça Municipality that provided the site and Asmaz Ahşap Karkas Yapılar that supplied the materials and sponsored the workshop.

Hızırşah Village is a traditional agriculture-based settlement located inland in Datça Peninsula that extends towards the Aegean Sea, and has a typically Mediterranean atmosphere with its vernacular architecture and landscapes.

The villagers make a living out of almond production and share a vibrant social life shaped by daily activities, rituals, gatherings and weddings most of which take place in the schoolyard that functions as the village square.

Therefore the wooden structure attracted a big deal of attention from the locals during its construction and started to be used immediately after completion.
